Most of us know only one way to fall asleep, a habitual behavior learned in early childhood. We lie down in a dark, quiet place, close our eyes, and wait for sleep to come. But what if that one path to sleep is blocked, and sleep doesn’t come? In that case, most of us lack any other option. We lie awake, helplessly waiting for sleep to come. This the beginning of insomnia.
Now consider this: What if we knew not just one, but three, or ten, or a hundred paths to sleep? In that case, when our habitual path to sleep failed us we could do something different; we could find an alternate path to sleep. This is the heart of the teachings of the Sounder Sleep System.
Sleep is the result of a series of very specific changes in the activity of the brain. Yet, like all brain functions, those sleep-related changes in brain activity can unfold in many, many different ways, not just one. Furthermore, recent studies of “neuroplasticity” show that the brain is not a hard-wired network, unchanging over the course of our adult lives. Instead, we can, through our own voluntary actions, establish and strengthen new nerve pathways in order to compensate for neurological injury, disease, or dysfunction. This is as true for sleep as it is for any other brain function.
The Sounder Sleep System offers more than a hundred gentle, effective sleep-inducing exercises. They consist of tiny, mindful movements synchronized with the breath. Each exercise establishes and activates a different set of nerve pathways, a different “sleep circuit” in the brain. Each one provides a unique and different path to sleep. The more we practice, the stronger and more efficient those circuits become. With practice, we fall asleep more and more easily and our sleep is deeper and more restful.
Each day of classes in the SOUNDER SLEEP SYSTEM guides you in learning and practicing three to five essential sleep exercises to enable deeper, more restful sleep. That guided, group practice has a unique therapeutic effect in and of itself. It is also the best preparation for your individual, home practice of the system. The more you experience and the more you learn, the better prepared you will be for those nights when sleep doesn’t arrive by the well-traveled path.
Why not join us for two or three days of training in the SOUNDER SLEEP SYSTEM? Your relationship with sleep will never be the same. You'll sleep better, feel better, and enjoy life more!
