I'm always puzzled by the high tolerance for Alfredo De Angelis's music here in Argentina. Here's a clue, maybe. An early Friday show prominently featuring De Angelis is advertised as "Tango Music for Families." Maybe I can appreciate De Angelis's output more if I just think of it as nice, polite, wholesome music for the whole family. I'm willing to give it a try.... By the way, Marzotto, the venue for this show, didn't have a dance floor, just music for listening, and food....
There is no doubt that Di Angelis was tango music for families. Milongueros Ricardo Vidort and Alito Candamil told me the orquesta wasn't one for the milongas; it was music played for the carousels in the parks. Alito went so far as to say that "if a DJ was caught playing Di Angelis in my era, he would be taken to the street and shot."
Times have changed. Di Angelis is played regularly in the milongas of Buenos Aires.
